Elvis si esibirà solo una volta al Grand Ole Opry, il 2 ottobre 1954, cantando “Blue Moon Of Kentucky” durante la parte riservata ad Hank Snow. Il riscontro pur se educato, sarà molto tiepido. Il pubblico dell’Opry, infatti, abituato ad ascoltare musica country e bluegrass, accoglierà quella musica rockabilly di Elvis in modo tutt’altro che entusiasta e le sue mosse verranno giudicate volgari. Alla fine della sua esibizione, il direttore dell’Opry, Jim Denny, dirà ad Elvis che sarebbe stato meglio se fosse tornato a Memphis e avesse ripreso a fare il camionista. Trovandosi a Nashville, dopo l’Opry Elvis verrà brevemente ospitato da Ernest Tubb al Midnight Jamboree Radio Show e in questa occasione Elvis dirà a Tubb che la sua vera ambizione è cantare la musica country.
RCA VICTOR-STUDIO B
Nashville era familiare ad Elvis perché è qui che fatto molte sessions di registrazione per la RCA, soprattutto allo Studio B, dislocato una sede distaccata della RCA Victor.
Da tener presente che mentre gli altri artisti dovevano prenotare lo studio e avevano un orario da rispettare, Elvis aveva libero accesso allo Studio B ed era comunque l’unico ad avere il permesso di fare le sessions di registrazione di notte. Il motivo è chiaro: Elvis faceva guadagnare talmente tanti soldi alla RCA che aveva carta bianca per la gestione delle sue sessions……… almeno per quanto riguarda gli orari.
Va inoltre ricordato che nel 1977 la RCA era sull’orlo della bancarotta, ma per la casa discografica la morte di Elvis Presley risultò essere la salvezza del suo bilancio, grazie all’impennata delle vendite dei dischi post mortem.
In compenso lo Studio B venne chiuso il 17 agosto 1977, il giorno dopo la morte di Elvis.
Oggi lo Studio B, fa parte del tour al museo del Country Hall of Fame di Nashville e possiamo dire che, per i fans di Elvis Presley, oltre che essere una tappa obbligata può essere una full immersion nel contesto di una sua session di registrazione.

Questa session di registrazione è quella che viene chiamata Nashville Marathon ed esattamente un mese fa cadeva il 40° anniversario di quella che può ritenersi una delle più belle sessions di registrazione che Elvis abbia fatto, regalandoci 38 bellissimi brani e merita qualche parola di commento.
Come si sa Elvis amava registrare di sera e quindi iniziava sempre alle 18 per finire alle 4-4.3 del mattino successivo, lavorando così almeno 10 ore filate.
I musicisti che suonano con lui sono completamente diversi e per questa session ci sono Norbert Putnam (basso), Jerry Carrigan(batteria), Charlie McCoy (organo, armonica e marimba), David Briggs (piano) e Chip Young (chitarra) che si uniscono a James Burton e Charlie Hodge.

Per questa session Putman raccontò a Guralnick che era talmente emozionato di lavorare con Elvis Presley e aveva il terrore di non essere all’altezza della situazione e in bagno, prima di iniziare, si guardò allo specchio e disse “Caro Dio mio, fai in modo che non sia io quello capace di rovinare tutto.”
Poi commentò la session con queste parole “Quella volta capii che con la sua voce sapeva esprimere un sacco di cose……… E’ stato il più grande comunicatore di emozioni che io abbia mai incontrato nella mia vita, dall’inizio alla fine”

Questa session di registrazione nasce dalle pressioni da parte della RCA che ha già ufficializzato la prossima uscita di un album natalizio e che continua a voler sempre nuovi singoli.
Elvis era molto svogliato e per creare la giusta atmosfera, Felton Jarvis aveva messo un albero di Natale, completo di decorazioni e di finti pacchettini appesi all’albero. Lamar si presentò vestito da Babbo Natale. Elvis a malincuore iniziò le registrazioni, ma il suo vero coinvolgimento arrivò solo quando il gruppo iniziaò a suonare un blues classico di Charles Brown “Merry Christmas Baby”. Alle 4 del mattino, nonostante il suo malumore, Elvis era riuscito a completare quasi metà dell’album, già il 16 maggio.
La sera del 16 maggio, durante la pausa tra “Winter Wonderland” e “O Come All Ye Faithful” Elvis e la band fecero una versione da 11 minuti della canzone di Bob Dylan “Don’t Think Twice, It’s All Right”, dopo la quale, Elvis mostrò una chiara mancanza di entusiasmo per il materiale natalizio che doveva registrare, tanto da andarsene lasciando band a registrare le tracce strumentali.
Nella terza serata di registrazione, l’attenzione di Elvis era rivolta soprattutto sul materiale della session di Marzo. Iniziò subito con la canzone di Kris Kristofferson “Help Me Make Through The Night” per poi fare il brano del cantante di musica popolare Buffy Sainte-Marie “Until It’s Time For You To Go”. Poi si dedicò completamente alla parte gospel, scopo primario di questa session, per completare una traccia del classico “Lead Me, Guide Me”.
Poco dopo, quando Elvis decide di fare una dimostrazione su come si può disarmare un uomo armato, la bella atmosfera si interruppe,.
Con una mossa di karate, Elvis tolse di mano la pistola a Charlie Hodge e a Red West, facendola saltare nella chitarra Conde-Hermanos di Chip Young. Questa perfomance guastò definitivamente la session.
Il 18 maggio, dopo aver completato altri due spirituals, alle prime ore dell’alba, Elvis si rilassò al pianoforte accompagnato solo da Norbert Putnam al basso e cantò due composizione di uno dei suoi autori preferiti, Ivoru Joe Hunter: “I’ll Be True” e “It’s Still Here”, più un’altra canzone registrata da Hunter e che in parte gli ricordava la sua infanzia “I’ll Take You Home Again, Kathleen”.
