Originariamente incisa da Golden Gate Quartet in 1947

Elvis Presley ammirava moltissimo Jimmy Jones, la voce di basso degli Harmonizing Four (Elvis Presley ammirava moltissimo i cantanti con la voce di basso ed, occasionalmente, anche lui cercava di fare il basso). Voleva che Jones facesse parte delle sessions di How Great Thou Art, ma non fu possibile. Nonostante questo, Elvis Presley incise comunque la canzone di Jones "So High." Il brano, per la sua impostazione, potrebbe essere attribuito a Jones, ma è molto evidente l’influenza del gospel "You Must Come In At The Door," incisa nel 1923 dal sestetto Wiseman Sextette. 
C’è anche l’evidente influenza di "Twelve Gates To The City," la canzone del Rev. Gary Davis, che la prima volta, fu incisa nel 1935. Il Golden Gate Quartet incisero la loro versione di "So High" nell’Aprile del 1947, ma usarono il titolo "High, Low And Wide." Il gruppo iniziò a cantare insieme a metà del 1930 con il nome Golden Gate Jubilee Quartet. Iniziando come gruppo gospel, nel 1940, presero un indirizzo verso lo stile jazz e swing, pur continuando a cantare il gospel. Alla fine del 1950, si trasferirono in Francia, dove divennero popolari.
